Halloween at work

Halloween has come, and my office was beautifully (dreadfully?) decorated by Laura. I’ll try to get some pictures.
In the mean time, here is an interesting perspective on work at Microsoft, and a bunch of links to more local Halloween spirit.
As time goes by and I grow older, I find that not only does my writing style get more pretentious, but also that I use my Live Space blog page as a repository for all sorts of crap – links, notes, reminders to myself, etc.
For example, isn’t it shameless that I would add a post just to say that the way to grant everyone read access to all the files in a directory from the console (the only way to do this in Windows XP Home as far as I know) is as follows?
cacls * /E /G "NT AUTHORITY\Everyone":R
Shameless, I say.
Good stuff
  • Tabbed browsing.
  • Support for RSS.
  • Good integration with Live Toolbar.
  • Print Preview that allows you to adjust margins and add/remove headers and footers.
  • Printing that doesn’t crop horizontally!
Bad stuff
  • I couldn’t import my OPML file ("no feeds imported") as exported from Onfolio – had to manually load RSS feeds.
  • ClearType is disabled if you use the filter: to add gradients to your document. Ugly, ugly, ugly.
And we’ll see how it continues…

Yes, an odd thing to link to. And yet Consumer Reports will regularly come up with something useful (that you obviously won’t find at the precise time you need it). Perhaps linking to this will help me in the future? Hard to tell.

In any case, I can vouch for the conclusion: mechanical devices are better than chemicals at unclogging your drains.

Ah, well.

Twilight Zone Episodes

I’ve been spending a lot of time over the last couple of days just reading up on all the goodness from the Twilight Zone. (nanu-nanu nanu-nanu nanu-nanu…)
Wikipedia has this very cool page with links to every episode, most of which have a nice description of the plot (twist ending included, of course). The stories are for the most part quite good; it’s a 30-minute format, which probably maps very well to the classic sci-fi short story.
Follow this link if you have the time to spare.
